Malware is software designed to interfere with a computer's normal functioning. It’s a blanket term for viruses, trojan horses, and other invasive programs bad actors use to infect unsuspecting users and networks in order to gain access to sensitive information.
Malware (short for “malicious software”) is a file or code that infects, explores, steals, or eavesdrops. Any unauthorized action on a computer can be considered malware. However, malware usually has one of the following objectives:
- Provide remote access for an attacker to use an infected device.
- Send spam from the infected device to more unsuspecting targets.
- Investigate the infected user’s network.
- Steal sensitive data to create accounts or other fraud.
- Steal anything of value, or in our case – access your crypto and NFTs.
We see high profile crypto accounts getting hacked more often because attackers know there is value to be had, these are generally targeted attacks. However, sometimes there is a bit of luck involved.
An attacker might target certain accounts they know are connected to high net worth individuals or networks in the hopes that an infected file or document eventually gets opened by someone who lets their guard down.
Once an infected file is opened, it infects the device and can start to send other files that look like it came from a trusted source. This is why its considered best practice to scan or sandbox files even when they come from trusted associates.
This week we take a look at a recent high-profile incident and how to avoid becoming a victim. It’s not that hard to keep yourself safe and anyone can do it, but does require vigilance.
